Henderson County Public Schools to Provide Meals to Students

UPDATED MEAL SITE INFORMATION HERE

With support from the Henderson County Education Foundation (HCEF), Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) will be providing meals to students over the school closure, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17.

Beginning Tuesday, grab-and-go pickup meals will be available at no cost to children ages 2-18 at 12 school sites. On weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can pick up meals in the vestibule of each school’s main entrance at the following sites: Atkinson Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary, Dana Elementary, Edneyville Elementary, Etowah Elementary, Fletcher Elementary, Glenn C. Marlow Elementary, Hillandale Elementary, Mills River Elementary, Sugarloaf Elementary, Upward Elementary, and Hendersonville Middle.

Bruce Drysdale and Hendersonville elementaries are currently on intersession, and students living in these districts can access the Hendersonville Middle School feeding site.

Beginning Wednesday, March 18, the Meals On the Bus mobile feeding site will operate its traditional summer route, stopping at six neighborhoods on the following schedule:

King Creek: 10:30-10:55 a.m.
Dodd Meadows: 11:05-11:30 a.m.
Shorty Collins: 11:40 a.m.-12:05 p.m.
Leisure Lane: 12:15-12:35 p.m.
Sugarloaf Apartments: 12:55-1:20 p.m.
Conner Creek Mobile Home Park: 1:35-2 p.m.

Additionally, Sugarloaf Elementary has mobilized a bus to serve meals to children in the North district, and will be making stops on weekdays at the following neighborhoods:

Taylor Road (10 a.m.)
Corn Mountain Stop (10:20 a.m.)
Cedar Bluffs (10:50 a.m.)
Cedar Terrace (11:10 a.m.)
Dermid Circle (11:40 a.m.)

Families who lack transportation for their child to access these meals should contact their child’s school so HCPS staff can deliver meals to their children.

“We are grateful to the many community members who have already reached out about volunteering their time, food and resources to assist us in providing for our students during the closure,” said Bo Caldwell, Superintendent. “We are partnering with Interfaith Assistance Ministry and The Storehouse for intake of donations and community food distribution.”

Individuals who would prefer to drop off food items to our schools may do so during the listed grab-and-go meal times, and volunteers will deliver donations to partner sites. According to IAM and The Storehouse, the current food needs are as follows: Canned Fruit & Vegetables, Canned Chicken, Canned Tuna, Macaroni & Cheese, Ramen, Oatmeal, Cereal Bars, Fruit Cups, Rice, Dry Beans, Soup, Pastas, Regular Coffee, and Instant Tea.

As the situation continues to evolve, there may be additional opportunities for the community to support our school families. Organizations interested in helping as needs may arise should contact the Executive Director of the Henderson County Education Foundation, Summer Stipe, at [email protected].
