Supporting arts initiatives—such as strings, visual arts, and performing arts—is essential for nurturing creativity, confidence, and emotional expression in K–12 students. Arts education helps young people develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills that are vital across all academic and career paths. It also provides an inclusive space for students to explore their identities, connect with others, and experience the joy of creating. Investing in the arts means investing in well-rounded learners who are prepared to thrive in school and beyond.
It is our pleasure to support the thriving arts programs in Henderson County Public Schools in a variety of ways:
Strings
The Berrian Fund was established in 2004 with a distribution from Mae A. Berrian Trust for the benefit of the strings program of the music departments of the Henderson County Public Schools. Each year, over 500 students in middle and high schools benefit from the Foundation’s Berrian Fund and receive advanced instruction, participate in regional and state competitions, and prepare for college acceptance and scholarship auditions. Bi-annually the strings department puts on the Berrian Festival: fall for high school students and spring for middle school students.
Thanks to a private donor, supporting the arts funds are also used to provide scholarships for private strings lessons. This initiative ensures that young musicians can receive high-quality, individualized instruction, regardless of financial background. Personalized instruction helps students refine technique, improve tone, and build confidence at their own pace. Private lessons provide a powerful foundation for growth.
The Henderson County Summer Strings Camp, organized by local orchestra teachers, runs through the summer and concludes with a free public concert. This camp serves rising 5th to 12th grade students and is open to all area music students. The camp offers skill-based orchestras, electives like fiddle and rhythm games, and daily guest performances. The orchestras and classes are led by HCPS educators, with support from returning college-aged alumni.
Visual Arts
Through generous donors and donor advised funds, the Arts Fund provides support for visual arts programs and students. Advocates For the Arts of Henderson County’s mission is to bring the arts to the people of Henderson County through funding sustainable arts education as it continues its established efforts in various venues throughout the county.
Drama
Belfry Community Players – The purpose of the fund is to provide ongoing income to support the dramatic arts in Henderson County by providing a stipend each year to teachers involved in the dramatic arts programs in the Henderson County public high schools to enhance their programming. Established by the Belfry Community Players, funds are received annually from the Community Foundation of Henderson County.
