HENDERSON COUNTY SPORTS COMPLEX

The Henderson County Sports Complex at Berkeley Mills, upon its completion, aims to be the premiere sports complex in the region. Years of planning, community input, and hard work will culminate in a facility that all citizens of Henderson County can enjoy and take pride in.

The entire complex will cover nearly 40 acres, inclusive of the historic Berkeley baseball field, four new FIFA certified turf soccer fields, a new softball field, and six new tennis courts.

Along with the athletic facilities, the complex hopes to offer restroom facilities, a picnic area, and a dedicated space for local food trucks. The walking paths that meander through the complex will add to the trail network of the Oklawaha Greenway.

History

These improvements celebrate the original spirit of this special place. In 1949, sportswriter Red Miller wrote that “Berkeley Mill is taking the lead in bringing more and better industrial and independent sports to Western North Carolina” (Asheville Citizen, July 7, 1949). Today, Henderson County is proud to carry that vision forward, leading Western North Carolina once again in creating accessible, vibrant, and dynamic recreational facilities. This project offers a unique opportunity to revitalize this historic property by blending recreation cherished by past generations with facilities for future ones.

Facility Details

The Berkeley Park Sports Complex will accommodate a wide range of recreational programming, from youth and adult league play in soccer, tennis, and softball to inclusive programs like adaptive soccer and lawn games. The facility will also support school athletics, community recreation initiatives, and regional tournaments that draw participants from both within and beyond the county. In addition to sports programming, the complex’s walking trail will promote fitness, social connection, and year-round outdoor recreation for residents of all ages and abilities.
