Shirley was an award-winning science teacher for 30 years. She inspired students and fellow teachers at Flat Rock School/Junior High and at Rugby Junior High/Middle School. She was named Outstanding Earth Science Teacher in North Carolina in 1979 and the Southeast US in 1981. Mentored new teachers, willingly sharing ideas and classroom management techniques.
