Paul-KnottK. Paul Knott was appointed Executive Director of the Henderson County Education Foundation in January 2015. Prior to his appointment, he served as founding Director of the Lenoir-Rhyne University Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville since 2011. Dr. Knott led the NC Community College BioNetwork BioBusiness Center and Laboratory at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, serving as Curriculum Coordinator and Manager for over 6 years.

Prior to moving to Asheville and joining the BioNetwork, his career included roles in public service, business ownership, executive leadership, consulting and teaching. He moved from Rockville, MD to Wilmington, NC in 1997, where with his wife he started The People Department, Inc., the licensee for the southeastern NC Adecco Employment Services’ franchise operation. In Rockville, MD from 1993 through 1996, he was President of the Center for Effective Organizations, Inc., a training and consulting services organization where he served local, regional and national clients with a wide range of management development, team building, customer service, cultural diversity, strategic planning and quality improvement programs. He also served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the USO in Washington, DC from 1991 to 1993.

Dr. Knott began his professional career as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, DC. In 1981, he joined the staff of the American Red Cross National Headquarters as the coordinator of the National Health Promotion Training Network. In five subsequent assignments and promotions during ten years of service with Red Cross, he provided leadership in promoting and increasing the reach of Red Cross services and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of headquarters operations. In his final leadership role with the Red Cross he directed the worldwide communication production and distribution system.

Over three decades, his higher education experience has included faculty and staff positions at the Lenoir-Rhyne University, University of Maryland, College Park, the University of California, Davis, Montgomery (MD) College, Cape Fear Community College, Brunswick Community College, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Mount Olive College and the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Born and raised in Hagerstown, Maryland, Dr. Knott earned a B.A. in history with Honors and an M.A. in health education from the University of Maryland, College Park. He also earned a Master’s in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley and completed a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University.

Dr. Knott has been married for over 31 years to Melanie Timberlake, a retired senior manager with the U.S. Public Health Service. They reside in Mills River, NC and have one daughter, Hillary, a registered nurse, and a granddaughter, Kai Luna.
